Shear Express and Technology - Data Capture
What data will the system capture?
The data acquisition management system is intended to collect and collate data on the individual sheep passing through the system (including weight identification and certain prescribed characteristics), characteristics of wool (including fleece test data and data entered by the wool classer) and data on the operation of each element of the system.
What will the data be used for?
The data will:
Provide the wool classer with the information to assess both objective and subjective criteria when making wool classing decisions – this is an important element of demonstrating that the system can deliver better quality and consistency of clip than traditional shearing; and
Provide the wool producer with substantial detail on individual sheep and on the wool clip, including:
- Sheep weight (on entry and prior to exit);
- Fleece weight;
- Draft status on exit (the wool producer will be able to specify drafting criteria into the system prior to shearing);
- Objective fleece measurement data (from OFDA or Fleecescan); and
- Exact composition of wool bales including the identities of the individual sheep from which the wool in the bale was removed.
This information will be provided to wool producers on a CD in a format which they (or their agribusiness advisers) will be able to analyse through standard “excel” style spreadsheets or through standard agribusiness software packages.
How much will in-shed fleece testing cost?
Initially, in-shed fleece testing will be provided on the system at market rates. Shear Express believes there are significant opportunities for reducing the cost of in-shed fleece testing when carried out on the wool harvesting system and will be seeking to pass on the benefits of this to wool producers where practicable.
What software packages are available which can be used with the data to be provided by Shear Express?
The Shear Express data will be provided to wool producers on a CD in a format which they (or their agribusiness advisers) will be able to analyse through standard “excel” style spreadsheets or through standard agribusiness software packages.
It is expected that the range and functionality of standard software packages that utilise the Shear Express data will expand as the usefulness of the data becomes better understood.
