In a report prepared for AWRAP, it was noted that 78% of the cost of injuries to shearers, are due to sprain and strain, fracture, and open wounds.
These are attributable to manual handling and handpiece injuries.
The report concluded that ‘reducing the incidence’ of these injuries by improving manual handling and handpiece design provides opportunity for reduced OH&S cost to the industry, prolonged careers for industry workers, presents more attractive long term career opportunity, and allows people with varying physical attributes to enter the industry.
