Shear Express - Working Conditions and Occupational Health & Safety

How will I be paid on the System?

You will be paid weekly. Everyone in the wool harvesting team will paid on a productivity basis which will be linked to throughput. This will be a variable piece-rate.

Shear Express pay and conditions of employment have been designed to comply with the relevant legislative requirements.

Will I receive a better wage than if I was shearing the traditional way?

Wool harvesters pay is expected to be comparable to or better than the average pay shearers, classers or shed hands.

Isn’t it much more dangerous than in the shearing shed to have shearing hand pieces potentially flying around in the enclosed space of the Shear Express system?

The Shear Express system includes a number of safety features including the ‘deadman’ handpiece switch and the latest shearing industry overhead drives which feature automatic overload cutout. The deadman switch stops the cutters as soon as the handpiece is let go of and prevents a handpiece from ‘flying around’ the workspace.

In addition, fewer workers are exposed to the handpiece than in the shearing shed because those who are not operating a handpiece do not go near to any handpieces during operation.

What about the risk of Occupational Overuse Syndrome?

This risk is managed through the Standard Operating Procedures and a workstation rotation roster to vary workers tasks throughout the day.

How much training will I have to go through?

Recognition of prior learning will apply to existing shearing industry workers.  However they will need training in addition to learn and familiarize with the Shear Express systems including the equipment, Standard Operating Procedures and OH&S procedures.

For others a full training program will be provided including work based learning opportunities to increase skill levels and range.

How will the Shear Express system improve my working life?

The Wool Harvesting Systems provide a modern working environment with significant OH&S improvement over shearing shed jobs.  A clean, bright, pleasant and safe workplace with good amenities and flexible working conditions (e.g. job sharing), multi skilled and career path opportunity, and a culture of mutual respect between stakeholders will allow workers to exercise greater self determination in their working lives than many shearing industry workers are able to attain.  Wherever possible, localized cells of operation will provide local employment opportunity and minimize traveling and staying away from home.

Will I have the opportunity to improve my skills?

Shear Express will incorporate cross industry recognized training where possible.  Also there will be the potential for individuals to increase their skill levels by training for the different roles within the Shear Express system.
